Pictures taken in 2006 to show various flash modifiers (44 pictures)

I decided to update my album on the shadow effects created by various flash modifiers. The first picture will show the E-1 and FL-50 flash with the modifier, and the second shows the picture that modifier took of my assistant Filbert. I don't claim these are great works of art, but it is a useful tool to go past the manufacturer hype of how effective the modifiers are.

In order to make the shadows softer, you want to make the apperent light source bigger. One technique is bouncing where you bounce the light off of something else, such as the ceiling, and the area being bounced off of becomes the light source. The other technique is diffusion where material is placed in front of the flash to break up the light.

One thing that these pictures will not show is how the eye sockets look after the flash modifier is used. Often times when doing a pure ceiling bounce, peoples eyes don't have sparkle. In some cases, people's eyes can be like raccoon eyes, where the eyebrows or a hat can block light being bounced from the ceiling. This is where combination modifiers like the Lumiquest 80-20 or the Flip-it come in, where they allow most light to go straight up to the ceiling, and bounce some fill light straight to the target. I would expect red-eye to set in when using these if the subject is far enough away from the camera/flash when using these methods.

The room I shot this in has a fairly low ceiling. The only editing I did on these photos is using ImageMagick to reduce the size of the pictures for publication on the web. I shot all of the pictures with +2 sharpening and at SHQ image quality.

Pictures using the E-1 and FL-50 flash bounced off of the ceiling (4 pictures)

This section shows the effect of bouncing the flash's light off of a ceiling, both with the flash straight up, and at a 45 degree angle. When I did my previous study of flash modifiers, one of the things I noticied was the ceiling bounce was tied with the umbrella bounces for the modifier that was easiest on the subject eyes in that you don't have a concentrated burst of light.

Pictures using the E-1 and FL-50 flash with an Sto-fen Omni-bounce (4 pictures)

This section shows the effect of the Sto-fen Omni-bounce flash modifier. I have the generic Omni-bounce that fits on a previous flash, but it will not fit on a FL-50 flash. The Sto-fen page suggests the OM-C adaptor would be best for the Olympus flashes. While a lot of people praise the Omni-bounce, IMHO, it just doesn't produce the desired soft shadows it is advertised.

Pictures using the E-1 and FL-50 flash with a Lumiquest midi-bouncer (2 pictures)

This section shows the effect of the Lumiquest midi-bouncer flash modifier. While it helps a little, IMHO, it is too small to really modify the harshness of the shadows because the apparent light source is only double the size of the flash head. It does raise the apparent light source up a few inches, which can move back the distance where red-eye starts to be noticeable.

Pictures using the E-1 and FL-50 flash with a Lumiquest 80-20 (2 pictures)

This section shows the effect of the Lumiquest 80-20 flash modifier, which allows 80% of the light to go up to the ceiling, and directs 20% of the light to the subject. It would be useless outside where you don't have a ceiling. The 80-20 is fairly large, but it does fit into the back pocket of my large camera bag.

If you go with the Lumiquest 80-20, you might want to look at the Promax accessory kit, which gives you the option of making it into a bouncer, and to provide more diffusion.

The idea of the Lumiquest 80-20 is that 80% of the light goes straight up to the ceiling, and 20% is reflected straight to the subject for a fill light and to create catchlights in the subject's eyes.

This section shows the effect of the Lumiquest mini-softbox flash modifier. While it helps a little, IMHO, it is too small to really modify the harshness of the shadows. However, it is small and easily carried in a camera bag, and might be useful where you can't bounce off of a ceiling.

Pictures using the E-1 and FL-50 flash with a Flip-it (12 pictures)

This section shows the effect of the Flip-it flash modifier, which allows you to control how much light is directed to the subject vs. being bounced off of the ceiling. At this writing, it is my favorite modifier, since it is small enough that I can keep it on the flash at all times, and move it out of the way if I don't want to use it.

Pictures using the E-1 and FL-50 flash bounced off of a white umbrella (2 pictures)

This section shows the effect of shooting through a white umbrella to provide more diffusion. The gear I used for this shot was:

I don't have an umbrella with a black cover, but if you are going to bounce the light into an umbrella, you probably should spend a few extra dollars, and get an umbrella with a removable black cover. This will direct the light towards the target, instead of going behind the umbrella.

Pictures using the E-1 and FL-50 flash with Gary Fong's Lightsphere-II (8 pictures)

This section shows the effect of using Gary Fong's LightSphere-II. Note, this model is no longer offered for sale, but Gary has a new model out that is made of clearer, more flexible plastic. If you can bounce the flash, you use without the top dome. Otherwise if you are outside and want to use it for fill, you attach the dome. I found that the dome made the FL-50 flash to heavy, and it kept on pulling down the flash head when attached.
