Pictures taken on an Olympus Photo Safari to Salem, Massachusetts, May 16, 2009 (103 pictures)

Olympus, Hunts Photo Video, and Digital, and Essex Heritage Foundation had a photo safari in Salem, Massachusetts on May 16th, 2009. In these safaris, there is an Olympus visionary, who this year was Lou Manna. Then you can check out various Olympus cameras and lenses, and spend time photographing stuff.

Because I've been to Salem recently, I didn't feel the need to do the usual touristy type photos, so I shot more photos of the people on the safaris. One of the things Lou talked about was shooting from different angles, and reflections, so I tried to do some of that.

One of the things I wanted to do was check out the combination of the 70-300mm lens + EC-14 teleconverter compared to the 50-200mm lens + EC-20 teleconverter. I have the 50-200mm and EC-14 right now, and I wanted to see whether I should think about getting the 70-300mm lens to use with my EC-14 (using the 50-200mm normally, unless I needed the greater range), or get the EC-20 to use with the 50-200mm. I had loaned out my 50-200mm to Lou and when he gave it back to me, it slipped and fell, bending the rear flange, so I wasn't able to make the side by side comparison of the same shots. I did use the EC-20 + 14-54mm lens to stand in for the 50-200mm.

I also wanted to play with the E-620, but after we walked to the docks, I gave back the E-620, so that other people could try it out, since there weren't enough cameras to go around. I used my E-3 with various lenses, and my E-1 with my Sigma 30mm lens.

In terms of post processing, I'm don't tend to a lot of post processing. I will usually crop the photo and apply smart sharpening. Sometimes, I will adjust the color tone and/or increase the contrast. I did experiment with a few techniques here that I hadn't tried before.

I did spend some time helping people understand the cameras, since I've been using Olympus DSLRs for 4+ years now.

I normally don't do much in terms of editing, but I kind of liked the effect of pushing the contrast up much higher than I usually go in post processing.
